The lakes of Burundi and other locales of Africa may seem unseemly kin to Winter Park's chain of lakes, or other bodies of dishwater in Orange County. But they do have something significant in public: hydrilla. The invasive submerged aquatic weed was introduced to the United States in the 1950s and '60s for aquarium plants but since have grown to be a stupendous nuisance in many lakes. Globe-trotting for a restore to health isn't uncommon for researchers at the Indian River Check out and Education Center, where scientists demand biologically based answers to outlandish pests that attack native plants or otherwise mischief the environment. Bill Overholt, associate professor of entomology at the University of Florida and a researcher at the center, traveled to Africa this year seeking solutions for the hydrilla that chokes Florida's waterways, including some in Osceola County.
